Both writers created their own individual fantasy worlds - for Lovecraft the universe is alien and unknowable, he is all about the cosmic, but Poe is more concerned with the gothic and earthly themes such as death and madness. The men never met but Lovecraft was a great admirer of Poe's works and devoted an entire chapter of his 1935 book Supernatural Horror in Literature to him.
